📊 Forex Markets
| Instrument | Last | Daily Change |
|---|---|---|
| EUR/USD | 1.1233 | +0.06% |
| USD/JPY | 158.23 | -0.04% |
| USD/CNH (Offshore Yuan) | 6.6735 | +0.05% |
The euro is caught between hike expectations and growth worries, chopping just above 1.12. The yen stays glued near 158 in a narrow range, with carry trades showing no signs of unwinding. Offshore yuan holds the 6.67 line, and the PBOC's approach remains "two-way movement, avoid one-sided expectations."
📈 US Equities Focus
🍎 Apple (AAPL): $343.99 (+1.32%)
- Market cap: $5.02T | P/E (TTM): 39.5x
- Analyst price target: $329.38 (-4.25% vs. current, "Buy" from 44 analysts)
- RSI(14): 55.1 | 52-week range: $243.42 - $348.15
- Commentary: The folding iPhone Duo sold out online within minutes, and Apple capped purchases at two per customer with delivery pushed into January 2027. Demand is real, but Morgan Stanley flags a "slightly challenging near-term setup." With the stock near its 52-week high, valuation is the binding constraint. Chasing here offers poor risk-reward.
🚗 Tesla (TSLA): $386.47 (+3.41%, -3.3% after hours)
- Market cap: $1.53T | P/E (TTM): 424.6x | Forward P/E: 184.5x
- Analyst price target: $397.83 (+2.94%, "Buy" from 44 analysts)
- RSI(14): 53.3 | 52-week range: $297.38 - $498.83
- Commentary: Q3 revenue beat and deliveries rebounded, but net profit fell roughly 43% and FY26 capex guidance was cut from $25B to about $20B. The bright spots: Optimus humanoid production started in Fremont, robotaxi miles are scaling exponentially, and 2027 Megapack capacity is nearly sold out. Yet the stock slipped after hours, which tells you the market wants profit, not slideware. Speculation about a Tesla-SpaceX merger has become the new valuation variable.
🔥 NVIDIA (NVDA): $221.97 (+2.54%)
- Market cap: $5.36T | P/E (TTM): 28.1x | Forward P/E: 18.4x
- Analyst price target: $328.72 (+48.09%, "Strong Buy" from 62 analysts)
- RSI(14): 40.8 | 52-week range: $164.27 - $243.37
- Commentary: The only one of the three still with RSI above 40, and 28x trailing earnings is hardly expensive for an AI leader. After GTC Berlin, both Goldman Sachs and Needham kept $300 targets, and Germany's Agile Robots plans to build up to 2,000 small humanoids next year under an Nvidia partnership, so the ecosystem is still expanding. The risk is the pricing game around a possible December hike. Short term this looks like a base being built.
🥇 🥈 Commodities
Gold: $4,116.32/oz (+0.05%)
- Narrow consolidation as haven demand offsets a firm dollar. Gold spiked above 4,300 in mid-October but has retreated to the 4,100 area, which means long-term profit-taking is also in play.
Silver: $57.41/oz (-0.67%)
- Following precious metals lower, and its industrial component makes it more fragile when the dollar bounces. Silver naturally swings wider than gold, so trading ranges beats directional calls.
📉 A-share Reference (October 21 Close)
| Index | Close | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Shanghai Composite | 3713.03 | -0.60% |
| Shenzhen Component | 11704.35 | -0.82% |
| ChiNext | 2694.71 | -1.62% |
| STAR 50 | 1343.28 | +0.06% |
| CSI 300 | 4111.93 | -0.97% |
Turnover came to about CNY 1.43 trillion, roughly CNY 26.8 billion lighter than the prior session. CATL's -12.03% dragged the ChiNext down and weighed on the battery and EV chain. The STAR 50 edged up, so semiconductor attention hasn't faded. Hong Kong lagged too, with the Hang Seng down 0.90% and Hang Seng Tech down 1.26%. On policy, the CSRC's public company supervision department mentioned steadily implementing new-share market-cap allocation on the BSE, while the Ministry of Finance told the APEC finance ministerial it will accelerate new growth drivers and expand domestic demand. Tone is deliberately steady.
🏛 Central Banks and Policy
🦅 Federal Reserve: Chair Warsh has said the October and December meetings are "extremely important" and called AI the most profound economic transformation of his lifetime. Market-implied odds of a hike have fallen from around 27% to under 15%, and the consensus is that the Fed holds the federal funds target range at 3.75%-4.00% on October 28.
Commentary: Falling hike odds are the main driver of this week's risk-on rally, but Warsh's hawkish streak hasn't gone anywhere. The real action isn't in October, it's in December. If inflation data refuses to cooperate, "hold" can turn into "one more hike" with little warning.
🏰 European Central Bank: The ECB hiked 25bp on October 16, lifting the deposit facility rate to 2.50% and main refinancing operations to 2.65%, its first hike in three years, arguing that inflation pressure has outweighed growth concerns. President Schnabel then signalled further tightening, citing euro-area resilience and energy-driven inflation risk.
Commentary: The ECB has turned hawkish, yet the euro hasn't gained ground, because growth worries and the US-Europe rate differential are pulling the other way. This round of tightening hurts European equities and peripheral bonds more than it helps the currency.
🇨🇳 People's Bank of China: The LPR has been unchanged for 16 straight months, with the 1-year rate at 3.0% and the 5-year-plus rate at 3.5%. PBOC-linked media commentary argues that "the need to cut the policy rate directly is not high," with policy leaning toward structural tools and targeted support.
Commentary: Neither prices nor property data create urgency to cut, and with the yuan relatively strong at 6.67, an outright cut would add FX pressure. Growth stabilisation leans more on fiscal policy, and the workload of physical projects is rising.
🌐 Diplomacy and Major Events
US-China leadership diplomacy: The trade truce has been extended by two months, with both sides publishing a "30 billion for 30 billion" reciprocal tariff-cut framework covering roughly $60 billion in goods. The truce expiry is the key date; until then both sides likely keep talking without tearing each other apart.
Commentary: Extending the truce buys breathing room, it doesn't solve anything. The real watershed comes after expiry, and supply-chain de-risking is already irreversible.
China-EU trade: On October 12, China and the EU reached 16 points of consensus, with plug-in hybrid exports to be halved and a tariff war averted. At the same time China launched an anti-dumping investigation against the EU, and Brussels is weighing a trade-control "kill switch" that could exclude Chinese companies from its market in the event of trade imbalances.
Commentary: Autos are the one issue neither side can afford to escalate, so quotas and consensus are being used to defuse it. But the EU is leaning on trade defence instruments more often, so friction will spread from autos into agriculture and more manufacturing.
Geopolitics: Iran's nuclear file remains the biggest variable. Iranian officials say all enriched material will stay in the country, Washington says the immediate focus is the Strait of Hormuz, and Trump has even floated strikes on the Fordow facility. Iran appears willing to drag talks past the US midterms. A Russia-Ukraine "energy ceasefire" has failed, and Washington has redirected its pressure toward Tehran.
Commentary: Classic trading of time, with each side waiting for a more favourable clock. If Hormuz goes wrong, oil and gold jump together and central banks instantly lose room to ease. That is the risk most under-priced in every asset right now.
